Introduction to Human Factors

Human Factors is a scientific discipline that examines human capabilities, limitations, and interactions with systems, tools, and environments. In aviation, it focuses on optimising the relationship between people and the complex systems they operate.

The core principle of Human Factors is that errors are not simply individual failures but are often symptoms of deeper systemic issues. Rather than asking "Who made the mistake?", Human Factors asks "What factors in the system contributed to the error?"

Key concepts include cognitive workload management, situational awareness, decision-making under pressure, and effective team communication. Each of these plays a critical role in maintaining safety in complex aviation operations.
