Humans Powerful but Imperfect
2 minIn progress
Human beings are remarkably capable. We can learn complex procedures, make rapid decisions, and adapt to novel situations — abilities no machine has fully replicated. However, we also have inherent limitations.
The human brain is not designed for sustained, perfect performance. It works best when tasks are varied, engaging, and within our capacity. When demands exceed our capabilities, performance degrades.
Key limitations include:
- Limited attention capacity — we can only focus on a few things at once
- Limited working memory — we can hold only 5-9 items simultaneously
- Susceptibility to fatigue — mental and physical performance declines over time
- Stress effects — moderate stress enhances performance, but excessive stress impairs it
Understanding and respecting these limitations is the first step in managing them effectively.
