Fatigue in Aviation

2 minIn progress

Fatigue is one of the most common and dangerous human performance limitations in aviation. It impairs cognitive function, slows reaction times, reduces situational awareness, and increases the probability of error.

Causes of fatigue include:

  • Circadian rhythm disruption (shift work, time zone changes)
  • Inadequate sleep quantity or quality
  • Long duty periods and high workload
  • Physical and mental exertion
  • Environmental factors (noise, vibration, temperature)

Signs of fatigue:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Slow reaction times
  • Irritability and mood changes
  • Reduced situational awareness
  • Increased errors and omissions

Managing fatigue requires both organisational and individual strategies: appropriate scheduling, adequate rest periods, strategic napping, proper nutrition and hydration, and the willingness to report when fatigued.
